IMAGE SQUISHER GUIDE

Convert JPEG XL to JPG

Image Squisher converts JPEG XL to JPG locally. If you have .jxl files (Image Squisher’s own small-size mode makes them, for one) and some program won’t open them, drag them in and plain JPGs come out.

How to convert JPEG XL to JPG

Three steps.

1

Drop your .jxl files in

One or many. Reading JPEG XL is built in.

2

JPG is already the default

On the standard setting, stills come out as plain JPGs.

3

Hit Squish

JPGs appear under new names, ready for anything.

JPEG XL: the new JPEG, if the world cooperates

JPEG XL is the actual successor to the 1992 JPEG: same picture, roughly half the size, designed to last decades. Chrome and Firefox open it, Windows is warming to it, and a long tail of software hasn’t caught up yet. If you archived photos as JXL for the space savings, at some point something will refuse one.

That’s the moment to convert back. JPGs open literally everywhere, and Image Squisher is one of very few consumer tools that reads JXL at all, let alone converts it in batches.

Good to know

  • One of the few tools that both reads and writes JPEG XL.
  • Conversion runs offline on your machine.
  • Originals untouched; results under new names.
