TIFF: the archivist's format
TIFF is the format of scanners, print shops and records offices: meticulous, lossless by default, and enormous. A single letter-size page scanned at high quality can easily weigh dozens of megabytes. Great for preservation, miserable for email, sharing, or actually looking at things.
Converting scans to JPG is the standard move once a document doesn’t need to be archival anymore: the page looks the same on screen and the file stops being a problem. Keep the TIFFs somewhere cold if you might need the originals; hand out the JPGs.

Questions, answered
Should I throw away my TIFFs after converting?
Keep them if the scans matter. TIFF is the preservation copy; the JPGs are for everyday use. Disk is cheaper than re-scanning.
My TIFF came from a print shop and looks odd. Is that a problem?
No. Print color files are converted to screen colors properly, not just repainted, and the app tells you it happened.
Does it overwrite my originals?
Never. Finished files are written under new names, so the originals and the results live side by side.
